The Best Free Games for Oculus Rift: DCS World & PolyRunner VR
Our final two favourite Oculus Rift videogames take us into the skies and add lots of action with DCS World and PolyRunner VR. DCS World goes for accurate realism with a variety of planes to choose from and ground vehicles, while PolyRunner VR is a fast paced sci-fi title where quick reactions are key.
Take to the Skies
Flying videogames are ideally suited to VR, providing an experience that can be exhilarating and easy to stomach as a people find being sat in a cockpit reduces simulator sickness. So VRFocus has included DCS World in this free roster as its can be a great all rounder for new VR gamers and seasoned alike.
Digital Combat Simulator World is a vehicle combat simulation experience in which players can pilot and drive a wide range of aircraft, land units and warships. As the name suggests, the title aims to be a realistic experience in which players control units from countries such as the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, France and Germany.
While the main experience is free, there are also 22 premium expansions that add to the list of features and vehicles. These include the Russian Su-25 fighter, UH-1H Huey helicopter, the A-10 and the famous P-51D Mustang.
Designed to offer as much realism as possible, DCS World is a great showcase for VR and the level of immersion that can be obtained. The title originally launched on Steam in 2013, and its only recently that VR support has been added.
The basic free version is worth a download just to try, but with the extra expansions available if you want to spend money further down the line, means DCS World has a big replayability factor with multiplayer, co-op, and single player missions.
For our final free videogame VRFocus looks in the direction of a sci-fi themed offering. Polyrunner VR is another flying title, but completely different to the realistic world of DCS World. Created by Lucid Sight, Polyrunner VR is an endless landscape dash where players have one sole goal, see how far they can get.
It’s a highly stylised world, full of bring blocky polygons and flat bold colours that merge together to create an intricate landscape. Simplicity is key here, the overall look may not seem like much but the gameplay creates a highly addictive videogame.
Players set out into the landscape at high speed, the further they get the greater their score will be. But its not a boring old landscape, there’s obstacles aplenty to avoid, from towering mountains and monoliths to volcanoes and random objects jutting out of the ground.
Your reflexes need to be lighting fast as everything comes at you at break neck speed. To help you out there are power ups to collect, blue rings give you points, green rings speed you up (as if you needed to go faster) and red rings slam the brakes on for a short time.
There’s multiple control options available to suit individual preferences, with the ability to just use head-controls or to use a gamepad. Polyrunner VR is a highly engaging VR videogame that will have you saying ” just one more go” as you try to beat your best score, and it’s completely free.
