PlayStation VR Launch Games
The PlayStation VR is looking set to have a great variety of videogame titles available from launch. The likes of EVE: Valkyrie and Loading Human have been known to be on the agenda for some time, however there’s also likely to be a few surprises. VRFocus always endeavours to sift the wheat from the chaff, and below you’ll find our top picks for potential launch day releases.
PlayStation VR Worlds
PlayStation VR Worlds will essentially be the software offered to consumers as an introduction to the world of virtual reality (VR). Featuring five unique VR experiences, PlayStation VR Worlds has been developed at internal SIE studios. The London Heist is promising a Guy Ritchie inspired crime drama, in which the player has to join the firm, get tooled up and go on a spree of brutal raids across London. Ocean Descent, formerly known as The Deep, submerges the player into the ocean within the safety of a suspended shark cage. Well, ‘safe’ is a strong word… is that a 12-foot Great White in the distance? VR Luge sends the player hurtling downhill at impossible speeds along busy roads and through hazardous junctions, but watch out for heavy traffic that might end your luge career before it has begun. Danger Ball presents a futuristic sporting event where victory is everything, and finally Scavengers Odyssey features an all-terrain, alien craft with which to explore a treacherous nebula on a quest to find an ancient artefact.
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
Developed by Supermassive Games, the studio behind the hugely popular Until Dawn, this spin-off title is billed as ‘the most disturbing rollercoaster ride you’ll ever take’. Essentially an on-rails shooter, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood pits the player against a stream of undead beings out for nothing more than an end to this ride.
RIGS: Mechanized Combat League
If PlayStation VR was ever going to be the device to launch a VR eSports phenomena, RIGS: Mechanzied Combat League would be the videogame to do it. A team-based challenge in which players each mount a walking gun turret, the idea of the videogame is to collect a token and deliver it to the goal. However, the opposing team are aiming for the exact same thing and will use every weapon in their arsenal to prevent you from making it home.
Rebellion Games is a UK studio that aims to revitalise the Battlezone franchise with the use of modern VR. Originally an arcade VR title from 1980, Battlezone is rebirthed for PlayStation VR with a brand new style and very modern videogame mechanics. It’s fast, intense and one of the most promising titles yet seen for PlayStation VR.
The recently announced Tethered comes from another UK studio, Secret Sorcery, and offers a unique strategy videogame experience. In Tethered, players must gather resources by day and defend their clan by night. Pacing is the key here: push your ‘peeps’ too hard and they’ll likely end up worm food, ignore them and they’ll become disheartened with your lack of interest in them.
Adventure videogames are rather prevalent on PC based VR systems, such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, yet on PlayStation VR the genre appears somewhat underrepresented. nDreams’ The Assembly is expected to be available around the launch of PlayStation VR and brings with it a deep story-driven adventure with some intriguing, head-scratching puzzles.
