NVIDIA launched its Geforce RTX series with Turing architecture aiding features like ray tracing a couple of years ago, today the 2nd generation of RTX GPU’s has been revealed. The company has announced three cards in its upcoming GeForce RTX 30 series, with the first arriving in a couple of weeks.
The latest GPU’s feature NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture with claims it offers up to double the performance whilst providing 1.9x power efficiency over the previous generation. The cards are the GeForce RTX 3090, 3080 and 3070 GPU, with the top-end RTX 3090 coming with 24GB of GDDR6X memory (50% faster than the Titan RTX), while the base RTX 3070 is equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 memory (60% faster than the RTX 2070).
“Today’s launch of NVIDIA Ampere GPUs is a giant step into the future,” said NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang in a statement. “The work of thousands of engineering years, the GeForce RTX 30 Series delivers our greatest generational leap ever. NVIDIA RTX fuses programmable shading, ray tracing and AI for developers to create entirely new worlds. Twenty years from now, we’ll look back and realize that the future of gaming started here.”
One of the big comparison statements comes when looking at the GeForce RTX 3070 and the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. At half the price, the GeForce RTX 3070 is faster than the $1,200 USD 2000-series, great for those holding out for a decent VR upgrade.
The cards also include support for HDMI 2.1, needed for 8K HDR TVs and ultra-high-resolution gaming. There’s better cooling performance thanks to the unibody design and a new 12-pin power connector which takes up less space but is still compatible with 8-pin connectors thanks to an included adapter.
As for pricing and availability, the GeForce RTX 3070 will start from £469 GBP/$499, available in October. The GeForce RTX 3080 arrives 17th September for £649/$699, with the powerhouse GeForce RTX 3090 retailing for £1399/$1499, available from 24th September. As always there will be Founder Editions from NVIDIA as well as models from ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision 3D, MSI, Palit, PNY and Zotac.
