Gameplay: Taking One Stride at a Time

On Friday virtual reality (VR) developer Joy Way launches the first instalment of its free-running title Stride for PC VR headsets. It’ll be an Early Access release with players able to tackle the Endless Mode. So here’s a little taster with VRFocus (badly) testing its parkour skills out.

Stride

Joy Way is releasing the modes in stages to help with development, so as not rushing everything at once. As the name implies, Stride’s Endless Mode is a never-ending challenge to jump, climb, wall run and swing as far as you can whilst trying not to die from bullets or a very long fall. The landscape changes for each run so there’s no perfecting a certain line, you’ve got to think quickly and adapt.

As you’ll see from the video below this is sometimes easier said than done, skipping across thin ledges to find an enemy shooting at you, or going for a leap of faith when a gap looks a bit on the expansive side. This does all make for a rather intensive, non-stop experience as you’d hope for in a parkour-inspired videogame.

Comfort-wise continuous locomotion is used and you can swing your arms for added momentum. This isn’t always needed yet take it too slow and the environment will get darker before booting you back to the start.

Stride

As mentioned this is only the first step in a series of modes Joy Way plans on releasing, with Arena and Speed modes set to follow this year. The latter is a race against the clock with Arena proving a more open environment to run around in. The final goal is to release a full story campaign when Stride leaves Early Access, but that’s likely to be a DLC add-on the studio has previously said.

Stride arrives in Early Access on 4th September 2020 supporting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headset. As further updates are released by Joy Way VRFocus will keep you posted.
