There are plenty of virtual reality (VR) titles on their way for the Oculus Quest platform but with Rift S being discontinued next year the headset wasn’t getting much of a look in this week. However, Respawn Entertainment has announced that its WW2 shooter Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will be released in December, supporting Oculus Rift and SteamVR headsets.
The addition of SteamVR support is a little unusual considering Respawn Entertainment is working with Oculus Studios on the videogame but makes sense considering the Oculus Rift news – although Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will be playable on Oculus Quest via Oculus Link. Thanks to the addition of Steam support the title will offer cross-platform play across multiple devices for the multiplayer modes (which have yet to be revealed).
The single-player campaign places you in war-torn Europe as part of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Aiding the French Resistance, you’re tasked with completing daring raids sabotaging Nazi bases on land, sea and air for an action-packed adventure. You won’t be alone with a veteran sergeant and young British medic serving as companions – bares all the hallmarks of a co-op feature?
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond isn’t just a WW2 first-person shooter (FPS), with Respawn Entertainment blending movie elements by featuring stories from survivors of the terrible conflict. All recorded over four years spending hundreds of hours interviewing veterans.
“The Medal of Honor franchise has always been a powerful series that tells the untold stories of war heroes, and from the beginning of this series in 1999, our goal has been to create grounded and emotionally authentic games that are true to the experiences of people that fought and lived through it,” said Peter Hirschmann, Director, Respawn Entertainment in a statement. “We’re honored to share these moving first-hand stories from survivors and veterans of WWII and deliver an immersive VR gameplay experience that provides high-flying action and emotional, intimate storytelling in equal measure.”
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will launch via Oculus Store and Steam on 11th December 2020. For further updates including the multiplayer modes, keep reading VRFocus.
