The Finnish National Opera is Looking for Creators to Design an Immersive Arts Concept

Emerging technology such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are being used as tools for enterprise, home entertainment and much much more. Artists have been experimenting with immersive technology for a while, which is why the Finnish National Opera is now looking for creators at an international level to submit proposals for an ambitious interactive art piece.

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet is looking for digital artists, developers, and innovators to submit an idea for the theme “Memories of the Future.” While the brief has been left open to interpretation when it comes to technology it must adhere to a musical score created by world-renowned composer Esa-Pekka Salonen and Paula Vesala’s story challenge.

The concept: “should embrace the spirit of performing arts, music, and most importantly opera and ballet,” notes the competition brief. Other stipulations include the artwork being transportable (or able to disassemble/reassemble), no more than 15 minutes in length, and use new technology/techniques. It should also work as a standalone piece – no live performance needed – allow for a level of audience interaction, and include wide audience accessibility.

Offering a prize pool of €85,000 EUR, the winning team will have a production budget of €75,000 to fully build the art piece ready for its Spring 2020 premiere, opening The Finnish National Opera and Ballet’s project entitled ‘Opera Beyond’ that will be exploring the role of emerging technology. The other €10,000 of prize money will be allocated among teams that have made valuable contributions at First Session.

Creators have until 15th April 2019 to submit their concepts for the piece. Once shortlisted teams will get the chance to develop their idea with Salonen, Vesala and a team of leading industry mentors. They’ll then have to pitch the concept to an international jury in Helsinki, Finland, on stage at the First Session conference in May.
