It has been a while since VRFocus last encountered Dutch virtual reality (VR) developer Pillow’s Willow VR Studios, the last tie being at Gamescom 2018 when the studio demoed its location-based entertainment (LBE) offering Exodus Burned. The studio is better known for an adorable adventure title for mobile devices called Spark of Light, and now it turns out that a version has arrived on Steam today.
Originally a Samsung Gear VR title released in 2017, Pillow’s Willow VR Studios then brought the videogame to additional mobile headsets like Google Daydream and HTC Vive Focus. Now, after first confirming a PC version was in the works and without a hint of warning Spark of Light is now compatible with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
A childlike fantasy adventure, Spark of Light is set in a fantasy fairy tale realm of Mothlings, giants and other magical creatures, telling the story of Nerow a young lad who needs to save the world from darkness. The greedy Moth King has stolen the sun, so it’s up to Nerow to track him down and restore the sun to its rightful place in the sky.
Featuring third-person gameplay, players find themselves in the middle of each world, with Nerow able to run around them, following paths and using various platforms to get to inaccessible areas. Spark of Light is all about solving environmental puzzles, as players search for fireflies to illuminate the world. With no combat to speak of, the non-violent gameplay is suitable for all ages.
In fact, it doesn’t matter what age you are, as Spark of Light was one of VRFocus’ favourite puzzle titles for Gear VR originally. Giving it a solid four-stars in our review we said: “Spark of Light is all heart, a wonderful fantasy escape for all the family. What it does right it does really well. Pillow’s Willow has certainly shown its talent for creating a rich experience that no one could really hate.”
