Just prior to the start of the Tokyo Game Show a couple of months back Square Enix announced it was making a virtual reality (VR) version of Kingdom Hearts. The Kingdom Hearts VR Experience has now been dated for a December launch in Japan.
The title is certainly more of an ‘experience’ for Kingdom Hearts fans than a fully fledged videogame. Square Enix explains in the press release that Kingdom Hearts VR Experience is a music video of sorts that looks back on the history of the ‘Kingdom Hearts‘ series.
The launch itself will happen in two stages, the first will take place on 25th December, while an update will be released on 18th January 2019. That initial release will feature content from the main story’s stages, while the update will then fill in the rest, so all the stages will be available.
Whether Kingdom Hearts VR Experience will see a western release is unknown. The VR experience looks to be a promotional tie-in to the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3, which is due for release on 25th January 2019. The videogame is actually the tenth title in the series and arrives 12 years after Kingdom Hearts 2 was released.
Should there be any further announcements regarding Kingdom Hearts VR Experience ahead of launch, VRFocus will let you know.
