33 experiences have made the cut for 2019.
The annual Sundance Film Festival which takes place in January is one of the most prestigious events dedicated to showcasing independent films. The New Frontiers exhibition is the part of the festival focused on new technologies and experimental media, featuring works by creators using virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). Today, the full line-up of content has been announced, revealing a rich assortment of experiences.
Well-known companies like Felix & Paul Studios have seen their content make the selection, with two of its VR titles – Marshall from Detroit and Traveling While Black – premiering at the festival. Marshall from Detroit is a 21-minute experience produced in conjunction with Oculus where the viewer joins Eminem on a night ride through Detroit with an up-close-and-personal view into the rapper’s thoughts and views on the city
Traveling While Black is a 20-minute documentary focusing on the long history of the restricted movement for black Americans and the creation of safe spaces in communities.
“This year’s New Frontier is an explosion of experimentation, bearing a motherload of innovative custom tech that take us higher,” Shari Frilot, Chief Curator, New Frontier in a statement. “Biodigital loops are terraforming and transmogrifying our world. The dynamics of biodigital looping – digital platforms that begin and end by connecting with a human being who connects to that same platform – are being taken on by this year’s artists with gusto, as they pull visceral focus on what it means to be human on this transforming terrain.”
