While racing titles like Project Cars 2 and DiRT Rally cover the more realistic side of racing in virtual reality (VR), there aren’t as many titles mixing in a little explosive carnage for fans of videogames like Destruction Derby. Ratloop Games Canada aims to change that injustice tomorrow with its latest experience Vroom Kaboom for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.
Creating a new type of gameplay experience which the studio describes as ‘Tower Rush with Vehicles’, Vroom Kaboom mixes in elements from collectible card games (CCG), tower defense and multiplayer online battles.
Looking to fill that car-shaped hole with its take on competitive vehicle destruction, players get to choose from one of three factions (Skullborough, Drift City or Soul Station), each featuring a deck of vehicles to take into battle against either an AI or human opponent. With over 70 different vehicles and units to choose from, they’ll be able to engage in 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 battles, with the aim of each match to destroy the other teams base whilst protecting their own.
Resources are limited however, so they’ll need to collect the appropriate supplies needed to deploy certain vehicles against the enemy team. The vehicles each have their own strategic advantages, whether players enjoy going into battle head-on all guns blazing or something a little more tactile.
Win matches to gain new cards and scraps as well as unlock new and more powerful units, all of which can be swapped between in battle. The collectible cards range from motorbikes, trucks, cars, tanks, helicopters, missiles to planes and more.
Vroom Kaboom will launch for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR on Tuesday, 14th August for North American consumers, while European players will have to wait until Wednesday, 15th via the usual stores including Steam. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Ratloop Games Canada and Vroom Kaboom, reporting back with any further updates.
