There is something paradoxically entertaining about a terrible film. While quality in movies is inherently subjective, there are some things that are nigh-universally considered rubbish, and among those there are several which cross the line twice into ‘So Bad It’s Good’. Sharknado is one of those, and has become a bizarre phenomenon, spawning a host of sequels and now, a virtual reality (VR) adaptation.
The Sharknado VR experience, titled as Sharknado VR: Eye of the Storm is being created by Autumn VR, and is planned for release on Steam, Oculus Store, PlayStation VR, iOS and Android later this year, though a precise release date has not been confirmed.
The new VR experience was unveiled at the premiere of the Sharknado 6 movie in Los Angeles. The developers of the experience promise that the VR adaptation will offer the same laughter and horror as the main film series, as well as some surprises exclusive to the VR format.
“In Sharknado VR: Eye of the Storm, players find themselves in the middle of the gory action as they battle freak, fin-filled weather phenomena,” explains Dave Hansen, producer and director at Autumn VR. “It’s a great blend of humor and terror which should appeal to everyone! I mean, who hasn’t fantasized about blowing away a great white coming for them with a bazooka?”
Players will be faced with scenarios and scenes from the Sharknado movies in locations ranging from Loa Angeles to New York City to Kansas. Players take the role of ‘Sharknado wranglers’ and attempt to save bystanders from sharks, jellyfish and barracudas with a variety of weaponry such as shotguns or chainsaws or even an AK-47. The developers promise many fan-pleasing Easter Eggs along the way, as well as plenty of gore.
