After launching its first virtual reality (VR) title in the form of Unearthing Mars for PlayStation VR just over a year ago, developer Winking Entertainment has today announced a followup experience for the headset, Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War.
Like most sequels, Winking Entertainment is looking to go even bigger and better than the last installment, which received a lukewarm response for its two hours of gameplay. Of course, Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War continues where the first videogame left off, just this time you travel back in time to the ancient Mars civilization discovered previously.
Rather than the mixed gameplay mechanics found in each level of Unearthing Mars, the new title will focus more on the first-person shooter (FPS) elements of its latter levels. Players will now have greater freedom, being able to move in and out of combat which will be especially useful when it comes to the giant boss battles the studio has planned. The title will also support the PlayStation Aim controller for more precise gun control.
Like any good shooter guns are key, with Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War stages featuring six or more weapons to choose from. From your bog standard assault rifle and shotgun to more advanced special weapons such as rocket launchers, plasma weapons, and chain guns, there’s plenty to pick. Additionally, boss fights will also give players the opportunity to play with some rarer weapons.
To bring a bit of calm to the intense gun battles Winking Entertainment has added a sharp focus ability. When triggered the world slows down, allowing players to quickly aim and take down enemy weak points whilst becoming almost invincible for a short period of time.
Much like the original release Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War looks to be a PlayStation VR exclusive for the time being, scheduled to launch on 18th September, 2018, for $19.99 USD. As further details are announced, VRFocus will keep you updated.
