Every week VRFocus brings you a number of sports and eSports related virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) stories as part of This Week In VR Sport. This week, The European Championships have released their own VR app allowing viewers to enjoy over 50 hours of content. The Sacramento Kings need you to help them run an AR panel at SXSW 2019 and Big Shot Basketball has completed beta testing.
The European Championships Launches Own VR App
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have launched a VR app this week to accompany the ongoing multi-sport European Championships. The release of the European Championships Lounge sees EBU member broadcasters offering viewers a unique way to experience a range of sporting coverage in an immersive way.
As reported by SportsPro, more than 50 hours of content from track and field events at Germany’s Olympic Stadium have been made available on the app along with a range of information including leaderboards and statistics. Individual broadcasters also have the opportunity to personalise the experience with viewers able to purchase the platform from the Google, Apple and Oculus stores respectively.
“The EBU has been a supporting partner of the European Championships since its inception, with a clear desire to not only bring the widest possible exposure for the event, but to also lead the way in innovation for how the event is promoted and presented to audiences.” Said Stefan Kürten, director of EBU Sport:
“This approach will drive new audiences to the coverage, creating a massive footprint across all screens, supporting and helping our member broadcasters and partners to the fullest. We’re proud to have worked together with our Members, EMS (European Media Services) and key event stakeholders to deliver on this ambition.” Kürten explains further.

The Sacramento Kings Wants You To Vote For ‘The Future of Augmented Reality in Sports’ Panel
Professional basketball team the Sacramento Kings are encouraging the public to get involved in voting for ‘The Future of Augmented Reality in Sports’ panel to be hosted at the 2019 SXSW conference. Since it’s launch in 2007, the conference has allowed the community to vote on which panels, demonstrations and more they would like to see hosted during the event. Now, Sacramento Kings Chief Technology Officer Ryan Montoya has asked for the community’s support.
“This interface helps us identify the most compelling new ideas within the many different industries we serve,” says Hugh Forrest, SXSW Chief Programming Officer. “In so doing, [this] keeps SXSW exciting, timely, and relevant.”
With Montoya joining the panel for “The Future of Augmented Reality in Sports” the lineup will also feature Los Angeles Chargers lineman Russell Okung, CEO and co-founder of Xperiel, Inc Alex Hertel and Charlie Fink, AR/VR consultant.
“Augmented reality is, literally, changing the game for live sports,” the panel promises. “Digitally immersive technologies are turning legacy sports stadiums into giant, interactive gaming consoles allowing fans to make the physical world around them, digitally interactive.”
The community have until August 30th to cast their votes which can be done over on the SXSW website.
Big Shot Basketball Has Completed Beta Testing
To finish off this week, Big Shot Basketball completed beta testing earlier this week. The AR title developer by ePlay Digital was revealed to have completed it’s beta testing and therefore is gearing up for a release on the Apple app store soon.
The title allows players the chance to enjoy sports content in a similar style to that of the hugely successful Pokémon Go. Finding virtual athletes in the real world will allow players to do a number of actions including taking AR selfies, building a fantasy team and even finding rewards as they explore the world. In-app purchases for extra digital goods and mobile adverting will also be present in the title as a means to generate revenue.
“We received great feedback with our beta testing of Big Shot and the team looked great wearing the app logo,” says Trevor Doerksen, CEO of ePlay Digital. “Now we are ready to launch version 1 of the app as we and game players prepare for the upcoming NBA season.”
Though the official launch date has not been revealed just yet, the app is likely to release at any moment. Should Big Shot Basketball do well the team at ePlay Digital have plans to grow it into a franchise covering a number of different sports.
