While Europe is full of companies working on the bleeding edge of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies, that doesn’t always mean the latest hardware is easily available, with some countries having to wait months or years after a US launch. Which is why Schenker Technologies, a European distributor, has partnered with AR specialist Metavision to distribute the Meta 2 Development Kit.
Meta 2 launched back in 2016 and offers a tethered AR headset solution with a a 90-degree field of view (FoV) and 2560 x 1440 high-dpi display. Other features include a 4 speaker near-ear audio system, sensor array for hand interactions and positional tracking, 6-axis inertial measurement unit, 720p front-facing camera and a 9 foot cable for video, data, power (HDMI Version 1.4b) as well as relevant software.
The closest direct rival to Microsoft’s HoloLens – which is much more expensive – the Meta 2 is designed around enterprise solutions where users are able to grab, move, and scale photorealistic 3D CAD files, enhancing the 3D design and presentation process.
Included in the package is the Meta Viewer Beta, a tool for cross-platform visualization of 3D CAD content that enables everyone in the product development chain – from experienced developers to salespeople – to utilize the tool without requiring any special technical knowledge.
The Meta Viewer Beta app also supports a variety of file formats including KHRONOS gITF 2.0, SLDASM, SLDPRT, STEP and STP, making the headset a unique solution for visualizing 3D designs for users in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sectors.
For those interested in purchasing the Meta 2 Development Kit Schenker Technologies GmbH will be distributing the kit to the European market via its own warehousing and logistical capabilities. Retailing for €1,779 EUR (including VAT) via Schenker’s own webshop mysn.de; the kit comes with a two-year warranty.
“Through our partnership with Meta, we are now able to provide the best AR solution to our customers which underlines Schenker Technologies’ standing as a leading XR hardware distributor and reseller”, says Schenker Technologies CEO Robert Schenker. “We are proud to be the first European reseller for Meta.”
