The PC videogame industry has always been a far more open platform for gamers and developers alike in comparison to the exclusivity wars waged on console. When Oculus Rift and HTC Vive first arrived there was this fear the same would happen – and to some extent it has – with certain titles only available on particular headsets. Both companies have said in the past that they’re striving for a more unified approach through initiatives like OpenXR. In a even bolder move, today HTC Vive’s own store Viveport has announced it’ll integrate Oculus Rift support into the store from September.
The inclusion of Oculus Rift on Viveport will see benefits to both consumers and developers alike. On the developer side it’s yet another avenue for them to monetise their products and possibly get seen in an ever growing and crowded industry. Viveport is trying to make this service as easy as possible for developers with existing builds that have hardware support for Oculus Rift via OpenVR already ready for this update.
All they need to do is head to the Viveport Developer Console, and they’ll now find Oculus Rift is available under ‘Compatible headsets’ in the ‘Viveport Listing’ tab. To opt-in a title, simply check the Oculus Rift box and create a production release under the Submit tab.
On the consumer side the big change will be access to Viveport’s Subscription Service, which Oculus Rift owners won’t get anywhere else. There are almost 500 titles in the Viveport Subscription library, with recent additions and all-time bestsellers Seeking Dawn, Tilt Brush, Pixel Ripped 1989, Shooty Fruity, A-Tech Cybernetic VR, theBlu and Knockout League. With a monthly subscription starting from $8.99 USD it’s far more cost effective if you want to try multiple videogames out. You get five per month and these can then be swapped out the following month or kept for longer. Plus there’s the 14-day free trial to make use of.
“By adding support for Oculus Rift, we’re doubling the potential user base for Viveport developers,” said Rikard Steiber, President of Viveport in a statement. “Viveport continues to offer the most opportunities for developers to monetize their VR content. From Viveport and Viveport Subscription, to availability on Amazon and in Viveport Arcade, we’re going to continue to expand and reach the largest global audience possible on developers’ behalf.”
