For anyone who has ever missed the ‘good old days’ of the arcades when there was only one button and the only objective was to beat the high score, Nickervision Studios have created a virtual reality (VR) titles that immerses the player back in that classic era of gameplay.
Ding Dong VR takes inspiration from 80s arcade classics, sprinkles in some vivid neon colours and then steps up the immersion to bring the experience to life in VR.
The title was previously released in a non-VR format as Ding Dong XL and has been given an immersive overhaul to add 3D depth and other effects to create what the developers hope will be an engaging, immersive experience.
Gameplay is deceptively simple, players just have to catapult between the top and the bottom of the screen, avoiding obstacles and collecting helpful power-ups. There is only one button to worry about, the Boost button which provides a burst of speed to shoot you from top to bottom or vice-versa.
Though there are a handful of cosmetic skins waiting to be unlocked, the real draw of Ding Dong VR is beating the high score. The development team have aimed for simple but addictive gameplay that steadily ramps up the difficulty as players get further in. The developer is keen to receive feedback from the Steam community so the title can be improved with further updates.
The title can be played sitting or standing for a comfortable experience, and 3D VR effects are visible throughout, as well as menus which can be navigated using motion controllers.
Ding Dong VR is compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality, and can be controlled with either tracked motion controllers, gamepad or keyboard and mouse, since there is only a single button control to worry about.
Ding Dong VR is currently available on Steam with a 30% launch discount, reducing the price to £1.46 (GBP) from the usual price of £2.09. Further information can be found on the Steam store page.
