If you want to be a bad ass, katana wielding ninja then virtual reality (VR) is the way to go thanks to videogames like Sairento VR or Virtual Ninja VR. Next week Japanese studio EXPVR will add another title to that list with Be The Hero, a fast paced combat experience coming to Steam Early Access.
Described as a ‘transitional superhero game’ which begins as an interactive comic book before moving onto the main action stage, Be The Hero looks to be a modern VR take on the classic hack n’ slash genre. You’ll attack various enemies with your main weapon – the katana – whilst having special, secondary abilities to defeat larger foes or groups of enemies.
The Early Access version is due to launch next Friday, 24th August, for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. At launch there will be two modes available, Story and Score Attack. The Story mode will feature a comic book section then the action stage, for around an hour of gameplay. While the Score Attack mode is a frenzied 5 to 10 minutes where players try to achieve a highscore.
Early Access is expected to take around nine months in total, in which time EXPVR plans to add additional stages and episodes, new weapons and special attacks, plus a Ninjutsu system.
For those keen to see the videogame arrive EXPVR has launched a Be The Hero Championship based on the score attack mode. You can enter the competition by downloading the free software from this link. Enter between now and 31st August and attain the highest score to be proclaimed a true hero. The winner will receive an original Be The Hero caricature by the studio’s lead artist, as well as an in game feature within the comic book section of the title.
Additionally, as well as the upcoming Steam release EXPVR is currently running an arcade version in conjunction with HTC Vive across Japan with the aim to branch this version out to the US in the coming months. As further details are released, VRFocus will keep you updated.
