The Samsung Gear VR has been the first taste of virtual reality (VR) for many people, owing to its easy portability and affordable price. The headset is currently even more affordable thanks to Samsung applying a hefty discount to the device.
Certain retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and Samsung themselves are offering the device for a discount on its usual retail price, with the deal available until 16th June.
The usual retail price for the Samsung Gear VR is $129.99 (USD), which on Samsung’s own website has been discounted to $94.99, while Amazon has slashed the price down to a mere $89, making it a fairly attractive option for users who want to get started with VR. The discounted price is for the newer version of the Samsung Gear VR and includes the 3DoF controller.
Similar discounts have also appeared on Amazon UK’s site, with the usual RRP of £119 (GBP) being knocked down to £68.70. It is unknown what other European retailers are offering similar discounts at present.
The Samsung Gear VR has a large library of apps and videogames which are accessible through the Oculus Store. The device is compatible with several newer Samsung smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.
Users who already have an Oculus Rift will be able to create a profile and Avatar which will follow them between the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift
Of particular note for users who might be interested in acquiring a Samsung Gear VR is the newly launched Oculus Venues, which lets users watch live entertainment such as concerts and sporting events, sharing the experience with friends and family through the built-in chat functions.
Oculus Venues is just one of the social-oriented VR apps that users who purchase the device through the limited-time discount will be able to enjoy. For further news on offers and discounts on VR hardware and software, keep checking back with VRFocus.
