Matt Swoboda of Notch Talks Art and Artists

Matt Swoboda of Notch discusses the advantages of the Notch software for VR editing and creation.

Matt Swoboda is the founder of Notch, which has created a visual creation tool (also called Notch) that allows users to create virtual reality (VR) experiences without needing to write a single line of code.

Nina speaks to Swoboda about the company, its product and the importance of providing the best tools for artists.

Notch

The Notch software was created after the team behind it discovered that existing motion graphics tools were very slow, and lacked the speed and versatility of real-time tools that were available in the videogame sector.

As a result, the Notch team set out to create a tool that allowed artists to work with real-time workflows without needing to learn the complex coding of videogame engines. Notch aimed to promote the Notch software for applications such as VR where people need good, creative and fast tools for motion graphic creation.

Many motion graphic designers use tools like Adobe After Effects or Cinema 4D, which work on a timeline, similar to how film editing software works. Designers only need to edit on those frames to add or change graphics, so coding skill isn’t required, but it means that the images need to encode or compile in order to become part of the final product.

However, Notch works in real-time, so any change can be instantly seen. This means that the wasted time where the film or animation needs to encode isn’t required, and it becomes easier to make quick edits and changes, as editing can be made during playback.

Notch

For creating experiences in VR, real-time editing and creation is often required due to the demands on the process, particularly for high-end VR platforms such as the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. As Swoboda says, it is very difficult to comprehend what a VR or 360-degree video will look like when only seeing it on a flat monitor.
