Well we’re certainly in events season now. This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles is looming on the horizon like a terrifying gamer filled colossus, and as you may have already noticed on VRFocus the ‘Pre-E3’ announcements are beginning to come in thick and fast. Although, as we saw yesterday not all of them are positive ones, unfortunately.
That doesn’t mean that E3 is the only big event happening in the near future, of course. Over in Taiwan in the capital city Taipei work is underway in preparation for this year’s Computex event. If you’re not familiar with Computex, or its other less catchy name, the ‘Taipei International Information Technology Show’ it’s a government-funded computer and technology trade show established in 1981. A now annual event that attracts big names from the world over and is one of the preeminent events in the computing sector. Naturally, over the last several years immersive technology has appeared in all its many guises and the 2018 event promises to feature a number of new iterations of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies.
One reveal has already been promised from ASPEED Technology Inc. The fabless IC-design company, founded in 2004 and part of Taiwan’s Hsinchu Science Park has worked on a variety of different projects down the years. But their most recent on is very much dedicated to the idea of 360 degree technology. ASPEED Technology Inc. will in fact be launching the first ever spherical image processor (and accompanying apps) which has been, according to the company, designed exclusively for 360 degree imaging featuring six lenses. In-camera stitching, live streaming and social functions are also promised.
“The revolutionary processor not only enables six Big-Pixel sensors, but also delivers functions that are tailor-made for 360-degree cameras, including in-camera stitching, 4K2K image quality as well as real-time live streaming and Internet sharing.” Explains the company, in a press release. “Together, the accompanying apps and the brand new spherical image processor have achieved seamless integration of hardware and software systems. This powerful combination is expected to disrupt the 360-degree imaging software and hardware markets, starting a new wave of SoC system solutions around the world.”
Computex Taipei 2018 takes place from the 5th to the 9th of June. With ASPEED housed at Booth No. L1032; 4F, Hall 1 of the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center. VRFocus will bring you more news of expected reveals as soon as we hear of them.
