Corporate Espionage, Design And Killing Robots in Budget Cuts

Spy action title Budget Cuts was originally announced back in 2016, with a HTC Vive teaser. Since then, its seemed to vanish, only to re-emerge from stealth at GDC 2018, complete with a release date.

Linnéa Harrison, Creative Director at developers Neat Corporation talks to VRFocus interviewer Nina about what influenced the design of Budget Cuts, and the long journey the title took to get to its current form.

Harrison states her enthusiasm for virtual reality (VR) in general and was impressed by the work that Neat Corporation had done with its early demo for Budget Cuts. Bringing her experience from her previous work with DICE and Electronic Arts to the company, she says she was excited to get the chance to work on a project she was interested and passionate about.

Part of the inspiration behind the design of Budget Cuts comes from Harrison’s work on Mirror’s Edge, which transferred to Budget Cuts the bold, bright colours and clean edges along with some aspects of the level design.

Budget Cuts is a title that involves corporate espionage, where the player is a spy trying to infiltrate a company to steal its secrets. Obstacles are in the way, however, like the menacing security robots. Since the idea is to not get caught, players need to find sneaky ways to progress, or methods to quietly and efficiently take down the opposition.

VRFocus has get a hands on preview of Budget Cuts, where the following was said: “Budget Cuts has lost none of its charm over the last two years, and with an estimated run time of around 7 – 8 hours should provide a decently sized, novel experience. VRFocus has enjoyed what it’s seen so far, we’re keenly awaiting Neat Corporation’s VR launch.”

Budget Cuts is available for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The experience is designed for room-scale, and is at its best when using three-point tracking, though two-point tracking will also be supported.
