Vimeo Has Come To Vive Video, Watch The CES Trailer Here

One of the most popular Steam VR apps is getting a new library of videos.

When it comes to watching video online in most cases, unless it is live gameplay, it boils down to whether you watch YouTube… or not. That might be a slight oversimplification of things, but one thing that is true is that like or not YouTube is pretty much the sole destination for a lot of content creators. One of the reasons why, and I speak as a creator myself at this point, when somebody messes up big time on the platform they manage to mess it up for everyone.

Vimeo - LogoOf course whilst it is pretty much the only game in town it isn’t the only game in town. At least not yet anyway. Twitch is making moves to up its game all the time and when it comes to general video hosting there are still the likes of DailyMotion and Vimeo with a significant following online.

When it comes to watching these videos in virtual reality (VR) however, YouTube is most definately in the top spot – especially considering its ultimate owner also happens to be rather invested in immersive technology itself. So it always a nice surprise when the other video formats get some support, and they did that this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas courtesy of HTC Vive.

One of a number of announcements made at the event by the company, most notably the HTC Vive Pro head mounted display (HMD) and the Vive Wireless Adapter, the world of Vive Video – the HMD’s native video player, and already one of the most popular applications on Steam VR for the headset – was given a boost by the announcement that Vimeo support would be added to the service.

“Whether we’re building our own tools in-house or partnering with other innovative platforms, Vimeo is committed to the future of storytelling and finding new ways to support our creators.”Explained the General Manager of Vimeo’s Creator Platform, Christophe Gillet. “Not only does the integration with Vive Video showcase some of Vimeo’s highest quality, human-curated content within the VR experience, but it also gives those creators an exciting new way to expose their work and engage with audiences.”

After the announcement HTC released a promotional video regarding the tie-up and you can see it now below. VRFocus will be bringing you more news about the announcements made by HTC Vive in the coming days and weeks ahead. Be sure to check back regularly for updates.
