NGCodec Announce Availability of New Lowest Latency Cloud VR Encoder
The new encoder could possibly pave the way for better Cloud VR.
Virtual reality (VR) content is constantly in demand, and in the past streaming high quality VR video has been an issue. We’ve seen a variety of companies tackle this problem, and now NGCodec are throwing their hat into the ring with their new NGCodec RealityCodec.
We’ve recently seen Tiledmedia win investments for their own high-quality video technology.
The new codecs from NGCodec are made for real-time streaming in the Amazon Marketplace and the lowest possible latency for interactive VR and mixed reality (MR) streaming. They plan to transform smartphones into high performance VR and MR clients which can view broadcast-quality video.
They want live events to stream to devices around the world with the same kind of quality viewers expect from broadcast video, and it’s a good goal to aim for. Their H.265/HEVC encoder, followed later this year by support for the new Alliance for Open Media AV1 Codec will provide what they claim will be the highest quality video technology for live video and interactive entertainment. If what they claim is true, it could bring Cloud VR technology one step closer to being a tangible reality.
Marc Todd is CEO of Skreens, an NGCodec customer that provide multi-video fusion solutions for broadcast and streaming. Todd speaks highly of his experience with the codec; “NGCodec RealityCodec delivers the best video quality for live H.265/HEVC video encoding in the AWS EC2 F1 public cloud. Pavel Novotny is NGCodec’s new CTO and VP of Algorithims, and he promises good things for NGCodec customers and VR video fans; “Our broadcast quality video processing technology will allow broadcasters to stream the highest quality live video at 60 frames per second to millions of viewers delivered with the same VQ as VOD with scalable cloud servers. Our VR streaming technology renders 90 frames per second and scales to meet the increasing resolution and frame rate demands of next generation headsets. Both will migrate to our AV1 codec implementation later in 2018 for even higher compression”
The company displayed their technology at CES 2018, Las Vegas, where users could experience streamed VR to untethered head-mounted displays (HMDs).
