Night of the Living Dead Creeps into VR for 50th Anniversary
Celebrate the horror classic with a new VR experience.
Supersphere has today announced an agreement with Image Ten to exclusively develop the popular Night of the Living Dead IP into a multi-platform virtual reality (VR) experience. The project is expected to launch in 2018 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original Night of the Living Dead film’s theatrical release.
“Virtual reality is incredibly stimulating and offers a whole new slate of possibilities for Night of the Living Dead fans to engage with the world and its characters,” commented Gary Streiner of Image Ten, who served as the film’s sound engineer and co-investor. “We are excited to partner with Supersphere to explore what that will look like, and to deliver something special to fans in the new year.”
Currently there are no details on exactly what form the VR project will take, nor what platforms it will be available for. It may well be a 360 degree video experience, however the hope would be a more interactive piece is created.
“Night of the Living Dead is one of those films that has become a cultural touchstone; it revolutionized the horror genre and to this day it influences how we envision zombies,” shared Doug Allenstein, Partner and Executive Producer, Supersphere. “Over the last fifty years the original film has generated a vast franchise and we’re thrilled to be working with the team at Image Ten to now expand that franchise to the next generation of storytelling: virtual reality.”
As stated above, there are no further details on exactly what kind of VR experience Night of the Living Dead will become. Supersphere has previously worked on a number of 360 degree video experiences, including Scream Queens – In The Scene, Michelle Obama 360 and NBC’s Timeless – Continuum Recon VR/360 Experience. The company does not have prior experience with interactive VR experiences, and as such it would be easy to assume that Night of the Living Dead will be a 360 degree video piece.
However, whether or not Night of the Living Dead will be part of an out-of-home experience, distributed via Steam, or both, is not yet known.
