Samsung PhoneCast VR Brings Android Video Apps to Gear VR

Samsung’s mobile virtual reality (VR) headset has tons of great content for it, whether that’s videogames, 360-degree videos, apps and more. Now you can expand those content offerings with a new app that’s launched in beta called Samsung PhoneCast VR, which you access a range of streaming apps all in one location.

PhoneCast VR gives you the option of enjoying your favourite video app in VR, so that you can watch whatever content you like on a virtual 200-inch screen inside a scenic 360-degree background. The screen sits around 9 feet in front of you, with the size being adjustable to suit your own preference.

The app is free to download for Gear VR users but there’s one small cravat, it’ll only support the Samsung S8 and S8 + smartphones, anything older like the S7 or S6 ranges won’t be compatible. Whilst the app certainly helps to increase the desirability of Gear VR for users with the latest handsets, the majority of headset owners more than likely have an incompatible device.

Yesterday Google also confirmed the roll out of Daydream compatibility for Samsung S8 and S8 + which the company first revealed during its I/O conference in May.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Gear VR, reporting back with the latest updates.
