China User Survey Shows VR Use Increasing

Infographics posted by China Regional President of Vive shows demographic spread of VR users.

China Regional President of Vive, Alvin Wang Graylin has released an infographic detailing consumer data gathered from the first half of 2017, which shows the demographic spread of virtual reality (VR) users in China.

The date used in the infographic was gathered by the 2017 China VR User survey, which has a sample size of over 18,000 people, and was compile in July, 2017. A previous VR User survey was compiled in 2016, with a sample size of over 6,000 people.

The infographic showed that the majority of VR users are educated to college level or higher, with 39% of VR users having a Bachelor degree, while 26% have graduated college. Chinese VR users skew largely male, with 70% being male and only 30% being female.

The age range for VR users is weighted towards the younger end, which is largely expected. The biggest age group to identify as VR users were those ages between 25-30, at 33%, with the 18-24 age range next at 27%.

As would be expected considering that VR users are mostly well-educated, the majority of VR users work in ‘white collar’ industries, with 18% of respondents working in those areas, added to the 10% of users who work in the VR industry itself.

The data from the 2017 China VR user survey was compared against similar data gathered the previous year and showed that overall VR usage is rising. In May 2016, 54% of respondents answered that they had tried VR, which is compared to 73.1% of respondents who had tried VR as of July 2017.

The data also indicated that most people learned of VR through ‘offline’ means, word of mouth, or finding a VR experience at a cinema or arcade, while many others found out about it through social media. Data also showed that most users would find VR more attractive if there were fewer additional devices and more cross-compatible applications.

VRFocus will continue to report on news from within the VR industry.
