Kandao Announce New 360-Degree Camera – Kandao Obsidian
Winner of an award for Best of Innovation Honoree at CES 2017, Kandao reveal new 360-degree camera.
Chinese tech company Kandao has announced the launch of their latest hardware product designed for 3D and 360-degree image capture, the Kandao Obsidian. The device has already gain praise and even an award, named as a ‘Best of Innovation Honoree’ at CES 2017.
The Kandao Obsidian has two variants, the R and S. Th Obsidian R features 8K resolution, and is capable of creating 8Kx8K/30 fps or 4Lx4K/60 fps for 3D-360 videos. The Obsidian S is designed for shooting at high frame-rates, able to capture up to 120 fps footage at 4K resolution.
Interestingly, the Kandao Obsidian can be powered in several ways, by external 12V charger, using rechargeable batteries or using an Ethernet cable by using ‘power over Ethernet protocol’. The manufacturers point to this advantage as it means that users can use a single Ethernet cable to power, control and transfer data from the camera, meaning the camera has high portability.
The stitching and post-production technology provided with the device is offline, not cloud-based as has become common with many other camera software suites for 360-degree video. Kandao Studio uses proprietary algorithms to generate 3D or 3D videos with a ‘one click’ system designed to be as user-friendly as possible. The software is also capable of providing real-time stitching for live-streaming purposes, providing additional functions such as digital stabilisation and de-noise to provide better video quality.
“We believed that 3D 360-degree camera hardware and software must be developed hand in hand if you aimed to produce a very efficient tool.” says Chen Dan, the co-founder and CEO of Kandao.
The Kendao Obsidian, along with bundled software, will available from the Kendao website soon, with a price point of $10,000 (USD).
VRFocus will continue to report on new VR and 360-degree products as they becomes available.
