In February 2016 developer Guru Games launched PC title Medusa’s Labyrinth for free on Steam as a standard desktop experience. VRFocus has known about the videogame since 2014, when the studio started a Kickstarter campaign in which it said virtual reality (VR) support would also be included. Now Guru Games has announced the VR version is set to be released later this month for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with Touch.
As the name implies, Medusa’s Labyrinth revolves around one of the most enduring myths from ancient Greece, that of the serpent headed woman Medusa. In this mythological first-person horror title players have to navigate the dangerous and claustrophobic hallways of her labyrinth, solving puzzles and fighting otherworldly monsters as they delve deeper to discover its sinister secrets.
With resources at a premium, players have to chose between lighting the way with a flaming torch or arming themselves with a bow and arrow. To aid the immersion of the horror experience the videogame doesn’t include a HUD, health bars or an inventory screen to distract players. If they want to see how many arrows they have left then they’ll need to look into their quiver.
Guru Games has tailored Medusa’s Labyrinth to suit most VR players comfort levels. They can go for the usual teleportation mechanic, use a snapping camera or go for full first-person shooter (FPS) controls if they so wish.
“We were thrilled with the response Medusa’s Labyrinth received from players and critics last year when it launched on PC, and it seems like a natural progression to release it on VR for that fully immersive, terrifying experience”, said Daniel Strom, CEO of Guru Games in a statement.
Medusa’s Labyrinth has already been downloaded more than 250,000 times on Steam and will be available for Oculus Touch and HTC Vive on 25th May for $9.99 USD.
