VR Nominees for 2017 Webby Awards Revealed

Today the nominees for the 21st annual Webby Awards were announced, revealing five experiences in the virtual reality (VR) category.

Last year’s Webby Awards featured three VR focused categories, Virtual Reality: Cinematic or Pre-Rendered (Branded Entertainment); Virtual Reality: Cinematic or Pre-Rendered (General Film) and Virtual Reality: Gaming, Interactive or Real-Time (General Film). The first two have now been removed leaving just the latter as the dedicated category for immersive content.

So for 2017 the Virtual Reality: Gaming, Interactive or Real-Time (Film & Video) category features:

That’s not to say VR and augmented reality (AR) doesn’t appear elsewhere. The ever popular PokĂ©mon GO has been nominated in Games (Mobile Sites & Apps), “On the Go” – The New Yorker’s Innovators Issue Comes to Life in an Augmented-Reality Experience and The Field Trip to Mars in Experience Marketing (Advertising, Media & PR), while Bullying in Virtual Reality featured in Best Cause-Related Campaign (Advertising, Media & PR).

“Webby Nominees are using the Internet in incredible ways to bring people together through humor, emotion, innovation, empathy, passion, optimism, and eccentricity—all of the elements that make for truly great Internet,” said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of the Webby Awards. “In a year marked by so much discord and divisiveness, The Webby Awards is honored to recognize the work and efforts of our Nominees as they explore new ways to use the Internet to inform our world and bring people together.”

Each category is up for two awards: The Webby Award, as selected by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and The People’s Voice Award, as voted on by the public.
