Fighting with a sword is something that has appeared in more games than it is possible to count, from The Legend of Zelda to Dark Souls. In real life, though, flailing around with a sword the way player characters often do in games will get you killed quite quickly. YouVisio Productions are hoping to demonstrate this point with Sword and Shield Arena.
Sword and Shield Arena is, as the title suggests, set in an arena. The player is armed with a sword and shield pattered after those used by the Vikings in around 800 AD. There is no magic, no monsters, there is your sword, your shield and your opponent. The developers are aiming to recreate the true experience of sword fighting, using realistic physics for the sword and shield to match the feeling of cut, thrust and parry as closely as possible.
The developers acknowledge that implementing realistic physics for sword fighting into virtual reality is a complicated task. The videogame is currently in Early Access so the developers at YouVisio can collect feedback from users to improve the experience to balance fun and realism.
Sword and Shield Arena is available for the HTC Vive. It is usually priced at £10.99 (GBP), but until 7th April the title is on special offer with 15% off, bringing the price down to £9.34.
