CI Games are soon to launch the latest in the Sniper series with Sniper Ghost Warrior 3. Lead level designer for the title, Tomasz Pruski has ruled out Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 being ported on to virtual reality (VR) headsets, but hints that something else may be in the works.
In an interview with Finder.com.au Pruski said that though the team had not attempted to play Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 in VR, the developers were experimenting with some other sniper gameplay ideas in VR.
Pruski said: “We have some ideas we are messing around with for sniper gameplay in VR. Especially as some of the headsets give you a space that you can walk around in and be tracked. So you can imagine being up in a bell tower with a sniper rifle and there are guys coming at you from different sides. That’s a perfect setting for a VR game. So we’re not officially developing anything for VR yet, but we are definitely looking into opportunities.”
There are several titles available that allow the player to take a position and shoot enemies that get too close. From The Last Sniper on the HTC Vive to movie tie-in John Wick Chronicles. It remains to be seen what else CI Games could bring to the table to make to concept different from others in the genre.
There are some features from Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 that might do well when ported into VR. Sneaking cautiously into position with room-scale tracking. The ‘scout mode’ from Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 that allows detection of hidden items and dangers such as unexploded mines might be interesting in VR. The Safe Houses where the protagonist can collect resources act as fast-travel locations, so would be fairly easy to transform into the type of teleport points common in VR games for minimising motion sickness symptoms.
Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 also features parkour, which other VR titles such as The Deep End are already experimenting with, so it seems conceivable that such features could make it into a VR Sniper: Ghost Warrior title.
VRFocus will keep you informed on any future VR projects from CI Games or other developers.
