Ready Player One Movie Getting VR Tie-In with HTC Vive

The movie version of Earnest Cline’s sci-fi novel Ready Player One is due to be released in March 2018, and as seems logical for a story set almost entirely within a virtual reality (VR) world, there will be VR tie-ins to the movie.

HTC Vive have announced that they will be the ones to partner with Warner Bros. Pictures to produce exclusive VR content tied to the world described within the book and movie of Ready Player One. HTC say they are planning to bring content inspired by Ready Player One to Viveport Arcade for location-based content as well as VR experiences and games.

Ready Player One describes the journey of a young man named Wade as he tries to decipher the clues left by a reclusive billionaire within the expansive VR world ‘The Oasis’ that lead to a mysterious ‘Easter Egg’ that allows the person who finds it to get control of a vast fortune and control of The Oassis virtual world. Not all of those who are searching for the Easter Egg are friendly, and Wade faces unanticipated dangers on his quest. The movie version of Ready Player One is being directed by renowned, Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.

“The virtual reality world within Ready Player One is extremely advanced, sophisticated and engaging, and with Vive, we chose the best system to represent the future of VR. Vive is the perfect partner to bring that to life and also has the broadest reach to global markets for the use of VR in home, mobile and offline channels,” said Blair Rich, President, Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures. “We’re delighted that HTC Vive will be partnering with Ready Player One and very excited to work with them leading up the movie’s release in Spring 2018.”

Ready Player One is one of the most anticipated movies in the world, and has tremendous potential to engage and entertain the worldwide market, showcasing the transformative nature of VR, and what it can and will be,” said Rikard Steiber, President, Viveport. “Vive is delivering on the promise of VR and continues to be the most advanced and immersive VR experience available to consumers, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Warner Bros. to bring these experiences to consumers, on all platforms, around the globe.”

Ready Player One is expected to be released in cinemas in March 2018. The book is available in e-book format, paperback and as an audiobook ready by Wil Wheaton.
