I’m not sure if it is something about the end of November but we’ve been receiving a surprising amount 360 degree related items in our inbox so we’ve got quite the varied selection this week. With our first trip into this part of the virtual reality (VR) is a short film about the difficulties some face for no other reason than they are girls.
Created as part of Plan International UK’s campaign on the subject called Because I am a Girl, the charity pulls the curtain back on an example of such a struggle. The video itself, called Mamie’s Dream follows the titular Mamie as she reveals her struggles to be successful and just to live a life unrestricted by the hardships others would inflict on her. It deals with hard subjects such as teenage pregnancy, of discrimination, the difficulties of being denied an education and even female genital mutilation (FGM).
“Mamie was absolutely clear that education was the only path that would lead to a better life. She knew that if she was to progress she had to refuse FGM.” Explains the film’s director, Mary Matheson. “Rejected by her family and ostracised by the wider community as a result, Mamie reveals how she remained determined and continued her struggle to become a teacher with help from Plan International.”
Come back on Wednesday for another example of life in 360 degrees. You can also find out more information about the work of Plan International UK’s and the Because I am a Girl campaign by visiting their website at www.plan-uk.org.
