In an announcement this week production studio Roth Kirschenbaum Films (R/K) has revealed its teaming up with Baobab Studios to turn the short virtual reality (VR) film, Invasion! into a full length feature film.
R/K is the company behind the recent reimagining of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Maleficent. The collaboration aims to bring the characters and story behind Invasion! onto the big screen, but hasn’t yet revealed how they plan to flesh out the VR film.
If you’ve not seen Invasion! the short film, narrated by Ethan Hawke, revolves around a cute, big eyed bunny rabbit and a pair of slapstick aliens. Viewers find themselves on an ice covered lake when the rabbit comes bounding along to see what and who you are. Its not long before two aliens turn up in a massive spaceship, shooting the local wildlife with the craft’s on board laser cannon. The pair of aliens who initially try to be fearsome and menacing, actually turn out to be fairly dim witted, and so the bunny decides to turn the tables on them.
Involved in the project will be renowned Hollywood producer Joe Roth and former Universal co-president Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, along with Baobab’s Eric Darnell – who wrote and directed Invasion! – Maureen Fan and Kane Lee.
“I want Invasion! to be the next Toy Story,” said Joe Roth, former chairman of Walt Disney Studios, now co-founder, R/K Films in a statement. “It struck an emotional chord.”
While Kirschenbaum commented: “The immersive beauty of Invasion! opened our eyes to fertile ground for new IP with amazing new characters.”
Invasion! can be downloaded directly for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR headsets or found in VR apps Within and Hulu.
