NBC has been a strong supporter of virtual reality (VR) showcasing events such as the Rio 2016 Olympics and the 2016 Kentucky Derby. Every presidential election, NBC News transforms Rockefeller Plaza into “Democracy Plaza”, and for this year the news broadcaster is teaming up with AltspaceVR to create an immersive virtual version for anyone to attend.
NBC News will be creating programming specifically for the Virtual Democracy Plaza, including debate watch parties, live Q&A discussions with political experts, political comedy events and more.
Using AltspaceVR’s FrontRow technology presenters will be able to appear in multiple spaces interacting with the participants in each space, enabling all attendees to feel like they’re only a few feet away from the presenter. This evening NBC’s TODAY show co-anchor and weatherman, Al Roker, will go inside AltspaceVR to host a ribbon cutting, which can be attended with or without VR equipment. Just go to altvr.com/nbcnews at 6pm ET / 3pm PT.
For VR users you’ll need to download the AltspaceVR app through Google Play or Oculus Store for Samsung’s Gear VR, Oculus Home for Oculus Rift or Steam for HTC Vive.
“This partnership with NBC News is a great example of how social virtual reality allows people from around the world to come together for a shared experience,” said Eric Romo, CEO of AltspaceVR.
