It was back in December 2015 that VRFocus first heard about HTC planning its own virtual reality (VR) content store, Viveport. Then over the last few months further details were released with the last in August with the opening of a developer beta. Today the HTC Vive team has officially announced the worldwide launch of Viveport so that customers can explore, create, connect, and experience VR content.
Up until now all HTC Vive content has been accessed through Steam, as Valve and HTC originally created the head-mounted display (HMD). Now owners of the headset will be able to access content from two stores rather than just one.
For the Viveport launch the new service will be offering a 48-Hour launch celebration, so that consumers can stuff their library with experiences for $1 USD each for the first 48 hours only, starting at 12am PT/ 8am GMT.
