VRTO held its 2nd annual FIVARS (Festival of International Virtual and Augmented Reality Stories) event earlier this month in Toronto, Canada, featuring 30 virtual reality (VR) experiences. The three-day festival included two people’s choice awards alongside a grand jury prize, all of which have now been announced.
The 30 titles at FIVARS were submitted by creators from countries as diverse as the UK, Jordan, China, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, Iran and the US. Every audience member rated each experience they viewed from 1 to 5 points and these were then tabulated and averaged per selection.
The winner for the People’s Choice Award for Best Interactive Experience was David Eisenmann’s Pearl, while the People’s Choice Award for Best Immersive Video also went to Eisenmann, this time for Help. Pearl, produced by Eisenmann and directed by Patrick Osborne, follows a girl and her dad as they crisscross the country chasing their dreams. While Help, directed by Justin Lin, is a live action story that takes place in the middle of downtown Los Angeles, where a meteor shower has left a deep scar on the streets of Chinatown.
The winner of the Grand Jury Prize, selected by every member of the judiciary committee was Real, directed by Connor Hair. “Consumed by Virtual Reality addiction, a woman clings to the digitally reconstructed memory of her dead husband. As the lines of reality blur, she begins to question which world is real,” reads the official description.
“FIVARS continues to push the boundaries of an industry in pursuit of transformational storytelling through a rapidly evolving medium, quite unlike any that has come before. Through our various events, we seek to educate new audiences about the emotional power of this technology,” said Founder Keram Malicki-Sanchez.
All FIVARS 2016 award-winners will be showcased at the We Are Wearables VR/AR Event on 4th October, 2016 at MaRS Discovery District as well as ProFusion Expo’s inaugural VR Experience Centre on 5th and 6th October.
