Within, which was previously called Vrse, has been trying to evolve its works, hence the change of name. Within has now taken on its first Director of Original Content, Jess Engel, which will surely carry this on.
Engel has had a career in VR already as Executive Producer at Virtualise, which is a VR content agency from New York City. During this role, Engel produced branded and original VR content, including Giant, a 2016 Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival debut, as well as Fistful of Stars, which is a multimedia VR space opera experience about the Hubble Telescope. Fistful of Stars will be premiering on 6th August at BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn Festival.
COO of Within, Drew Larner, commented on how well Engel will fit into her role and lift the company up as a whole: “There’s currently a massive opportunity in the marketplace to be among the leaders in utilizing VR technology to produce immersive, approachable and meaningful narrative VR content. Jess understands the creative and technical nuances inherent in meeting the challenge of delivering on that opportunity. We’re thrilled to have her on the team leading our original content operations.”
Most recently, Within, hosted a “global simulcast” for the release of Mr Robot. It was a one time viewing on Within’s app. Last month also saw the release of a Ted Talks by CEO Chris Milk who claimed that VR was the ultimate storytelling method, saying: “I quickly started building things in this new medium, and through the process we realised something: that VR is going to play an incredibly important role in the history of mediums. In fact, it’s going to be the last one. I mean this because it’s the first medium that actually makes the jump from our internalisation of an author’s expression of an experience, to our experiencing it firsthand.”
