Speed Through Ground Control Studios Neon World of Return Zero VR

Portuguese studio Ground Control Studios has announced today that its sci-fi, neon clad racer Return Zero VR has now launched for mobile platforms, with a PC version due later this month.

Return Zero VR is a tunnel-racer that takes it’s futuristic design elements from 80’s videogames and movies, such as Tron. Taking control of a high speed spacecraft players hurtle down a series of tracks that feature speed up markers and walls to avoid.

The videogame is currently available for iOS and Android for use with compatible virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) like Google Cardboard, Merge VR, Zeiss VR One and many more.

The control scheme is gaze based, where players move their heads to alter the ships horizontal and vertical movement. “We felt that having game-pads or other non-motion controllers is a complete immersion-breaker in VR, so we wanted to try something different,” said Rui Guedes, Lead Game-designer. “Using gaze control is also perfect for mobile, since it’s a more convenient interaction method.”

VR racing titles that feature breakneck speeds can affect some gamers with simulator sickness. The developer was very aware of this and João Martins, lead-developer commented: “VR is a daunting concept to many people, present them a game so fast and so exciting-looking like Return Zero, and they will instantly assume that it is going to make them sick. Nothing could be further from the real experience. We have tested and tweaked that bit for a very long time, it is very hard for someone to feel sick playing Return Zero VR at the moment. It is one of the most comfortable VR experiences we’ve ever produced.”

Ground Control Studios will also launch the title on Steam for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive with a release date scheduled for 18th August, 2016.

As further details are released VRFocus will bring you the latest updates.
