Space Rift – Episode 1 Demo Released For Oculus Rift and HTC Vive and Gets Name Change

Last week saw the release of the full version of Space Rift – Episode 1 for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift PC-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD), and now there is a playable demo for those who want to try out what the title is all about before purchasing the full version.

Vibrant Core, the studio that developed the space adventure VR, released the demo along with a name change. There isn’t much detailed about the content of the demo, but the full version puts the player into the role of Casey Black, a pilot of WEYSS, a strict megacorp who leaps humanity after its move to Mars after a meteor shower on Earth. Casey now has no choice but to join the rebels after being labelled a traitor, and humanity now depends on you to liberate it.

The change of name marks something more than simple semantics, as outlined by the studio in a forum post. Despite the full version’s release, it seems as though there are plans to shake up the videogame as a whole: “We thought long and hard about the term “Episode 1”, but were reluctant to just put that behind the “Space Rift” title, because we felt that it didn’t do the format justice. According to our current plans, the next game might go a completely different direction, story- and gameplay-wise, so the classic episodic route wouldn’t really fit here. However, having seen the “uprising” in the forums and reviews, we decided that changing the name like this is the better way of handling things for now.”

The demo is free to download from the Steam for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and the full version is priced at £14.99 (GBP). Although it has been released for PC HMDs, it has also been developed for PlayStation VR and Gear VR.
