Nebulous Release Date Confirmed for Oculus Rift

San Diego, California-based Namazu Studios has confirmed today that’s its sci-fi physics-based puzzler Nebulous, will see a multi-platform launch next month which includes the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).

Nebulous centres around Commander Dash Johnson who’s pulled through a wormhole filled with giant puzzles and deadly traps. Rather than controlling the character players are in charge of strategically positioning devices such as gravity altering machines, bouncers, conveyor belts and other gadgets to direct Johnson past all the obstacles and toward the exit portal.

The title will launch on 30th August for PlayStation 4,PC and Mac with the Oculus Rift version also available the same day. For the virtual reality (VR) version however, Namazu Studios has added an extra gameplay mechanic in the form of head-based controls. Rather than using a gamepad players will be able to move and position objects by simply looking at them and moving their head. An PlayStation VR version is also planned for release later this year, but as yet no dates have been confirmed.

“As fans of Rube Goldberg machines and games that allow players to manipulate physics in fun and interesting ways, we made Nebulous to merge the essence of experimental puzzle solving with modern technology,” said Keith Hudnall, technical director, Namazu Studios.

Nebulous first came to VRFocus’ attention a couple of years ago when the developer launched a Steam Greenlight campaign. Then in February this year Nebulous launched through Steam Early Access where its still currently available for £6.99 GBP. The 30th August release date is for the fully fledged title, but if it looks like something you might like it maybe worth picking up while in early access as Namazu Studios does note in the listing: “We plan to raise the price on launch.”

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Nebulous, reporting back with any further updates.
