Sony’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) press conference this year was filled with big news for fans of virtual reality (VR). Not only did the company announce that the PlayStation VR (PSVR) headset would be released on October 13th this year, it also revealed that it would have a library of 50 videogames before the year is out, with some exciting PSVR exclusives to be available from launch.
Of course, to make the most of these exciting titles PSVR headset owners will also need PlayStation Move controllers so Sony has announced a new bundle for American customers, in which the PlayStation Move controllers will be available as a two-pack. Though players will be able to use their Dualshock 4 controller when playing PSVR videogames, the PlayStation Move wands will be needed to interact with all of the different experiences and videogames that will be on offer since Final Fantasy XV and Batman: Arkham VR have both been confirmed to be exclusively for PlayStation Move.
The controller bundle is set to cost $99.99 on launch, with the PSVR headset priced at $399/£349, and its videogames will range in price from $9.99 to $59.99. Taken together, this pricing makes the PSVR an extremely accessible and affordable home VR option, especially considering it will work with the standard PlayStation 4 console already owned by millions of gamers.
Pre-orders for the PlayStation VR launched at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) 2016 for $399 /£349 and many retailers including Amazon and GAME sold out of their allocated stock extremely quickly. Sony Interactive Entertainment has recently released phase 2 of the headset, with online retailers receiving more stock to fulfill pre-order demands.
Though the PlayStation Move bundle has only been given a US price point with no firm release date, it’s likely that more similar bundles will be announced for global release as we get closer to the PSVR launch in October and we will report as more information is released.
