Last month VRFocus reported on indie developer Computer Lunch announcing its first virtual reality (VR) videogame SwingStar VR. The title, which won the ‘best gameplay’ award at GameaCon 2015, has now launched on both the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR head-mounted displays (HMDs).
Set in a bright, colourful world that’s been designed to be quite minimalist, players take control of a character with a special helmet that has a spring-loaded hand attached. SwingStar VR is all about acrobatics, using the spring-loaded hand to grab onto various objects located around the world to swing between. The Gear VR version doesn’t require a controller to play, simply look where you want to grab next and the hand will grab it.
Initially there’s 16 levels to explore and master to achieve a three star rating, get all the stars to unlock a mysterious inter-dimensional universe. Computer Lunch does also note that further levels will be added soon. There’s also upgrades to be found where your swing can be sped up with collectable Turbo YoYo’s, jelly chill out zones slow the pace down or find a cannon to blast you through the air.
Anyone who easily suffers from simulator sickness may want to steer clear of SwingStar VR as the listing on the Oculus Store for Gear VR and Oculus Home for the Rift both state ‘Comfortable for Few’ and ‘Intense’ respectively.
