Virtual reality (VR) seems to be expanding beyond itself, now with the ability to play games that weren’t initially intended for VR. This has come about after it has been said that there is a SteamVR Desktop Theatre Mode in early development, and it can be expected to be showcased during this year’s Game Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.
The latest addition to Valve’s online store VR section ‘is in early beta’, but even in this early state the Desktop Theatre Mode allows users to play non-VR video games with head-mounted displays (HMD) such as the HTC Vive ‘and others’. This will be an interesting development as developers producing VR video games are working hard to translate non-VR products into immersive experiences without subjecting the player to motion sickness and general discomfort.
Expect much more news on the development of this new technology as this could potentially prove to be an easier route to making non-VR into VR without scrapping everything and starting from the beginning. Developments will come as GDC happens next week.
