One of the main events at the Game Developers Conference this week is Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) press conference taking place today. There’s been lots of rumours and speculation on what may be announced by the company in regards to PlayStation VR and its not been disappointing. Now a price and release date has been revealed along with pre-orders.
The PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) will retail for $399 USD / £349.99 GBP when it launches in October 2016. While pre-orders haven’t yet launched SCE will be unveiling further details at some point tonight, its twitter feed says: “PlayStation VR is coming in October. £349.99 RRP. Pre-order info coming tonight!”
This news ends months of speculation as SCE’s competitors have released far more information. This puts the PlayStation VR considerably under the cost of the HTC Vive and a couple of hundred under the price of the Oculus Rift.
PlayStation VR features a 1080p OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This screen is even capable of ‘reprojecting’ experiences that run in 60fps natively over to 120fps in-HMD. This takes some of the pressure off of the performance of VR compatible titles, which ideally need to be running at a minimum of 90fps for experiences to convince players that they have stepped into another world entirely.
When the pre-order details are revealed VRFocus will bring you all the latest information.
