HTC Vive Pre-Orders Now Backdated to May

Yesterday added further excitement to the virtual reality (VR) rollercoaster that is 2016 with the opening of pre-orders for the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD). The company has already revealed it sold 15,000 units in the first 10 minutes of the headset going on sale. And now due to the demand the pre-order listing page is no longer shipping in April, this has now slipped to May.

All 24 countries listed on HTC’s pre-order site now say shipping will begin in May, and with demand seemingly high that date might be backdated further. Its no surprise that HTC would have to eventually backdate orders as its a similar scenario to Oculus VR, when it’s pre-orders launched in January for the Oculus Rift. Those units will be to go out at the end of March, but anyone purchasing now will have to wait until July to see theirs.

The HTC Vive is due to begin shipping to customers on 5th April, and although its $799 USD price tag is $200 USD more than the Oculus Rift at $599, that doesn’t seem to have put people off. Oculus VR hasn’t released any official sales figures at present for the headset, so it’s difficult to tell how close the rival companies have come to matching each other.

That extra $200 USD does get buyers a few extra goodies for the HTC Vive, including the Lighthouse Room Scale tracking system and two wireless motion-tracked controllers. VRFocus will continue its coverage of the HTC Vive, reporting back any further updates.
