There are some genres that the Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) has more than enough entries in. Fishing isn’t one of them. With that in mind, Solitaire Jester developer Resolution Games is today launching its second project for the platform, Bait!. Not only is this the first fishing videogame for Samsung and Oculus VR’s popular HMD, but it’s also the first to include in-app purchases (IAPs).
Bait! can be downloaded for free and does not require a gamepad to be played. It’s a first-person experience in which the player character is taking a vacation on a remote island and takes up fishing to help out with a number of issues and jobs. Playing involves casting a rod, catching fish and then entering into a minigame in which you must reel in your catch without letting it escape or breaking a line, all of which is done with tell timed presses of the touchpad.
In terms of IAPs, players will be able to purchase better equipment with real money, though they’ll also be able to grab it through in-game currency. It’s one of the first examples of the payment model on the platform, and it remains to be seen just how well this will perform.
VRFocus took a look at Bait! earlier today. The title’s simple mechanics look to appeal to a wider audience than just fishing enthusiasts, but it’s the bright, cheerful, and well-rounded presentation that impresses the most.
