Pre-orders for the HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) have finally gone live today. Fans can now secure their unit for first shipping on 5th April 2016 provided that they’re fast enough. International pricing for the kit was revealed yesterday but it appears that actually shipping the kit is going to add a fair bit of more money to the total depending on where you are in the world.
If you’re in the US, then you can expect to pay $30 USD on top of the $799 price tag for the HTC Vive. It’s other countries that are hit the hardest, however. Shipping to the UK adds £57.60 GBP onto the £689 device, bringing the total cost to £746.60. Australia is suffering too; the $817.27 AUD device costs some $110 to ship, bringing the total for $927.27. For EU territories, an increase of around €72 – €75 is to be expected, taking the kit from €899 to around €973 – €976.
Take note that the HTC Vive does has a lot to ship in its launch bundle. Aside from the HMD there’s also two position tracked controllers and two Lighthouse user base stations, all of which are expensive in their own right. Perhaps the increase was to be expected, then, but will it stop some from halting their pre-orders?
