Syfy’s New Series, Halcyon, to Consist of Traditional and VR Episodes

Much of the language of virtual reality (VR) film is still to be worked out. World of Tanks developer Wargaming made that clear when VRFocus visited the set of its latest shoot earlier this week. There’s plenty of room for experimentation in this new field, then, and science-fiction channel Syfy is doing just that with a newly-commissioned series named Halcyon. The unique project will consist of a season that mixes traditional episodes with ones that will be distributed in VR.

Produced by Emmy award-winning content studio, Secret Location, Halcyon will have 15 initial episodes, 10 of which will be viewed through televisions on the Syfy channel, with the remaining five shot and shown in VR. The series is set in 2058 and showcases a future in which VR has hit the mainstream in a big way. Following a police detective known as Juile Dover, the series will dive into a real murder that’s taken place within VR. The VR episodes will come to the Oculus Rift, with other platforms to be announced in the near future.

“Syfy is the perfect home for launching this innovative, hybrid linear and virtual reality series,” commented Steve Patscheck, EVP Global Programming of Syfy parent company, NBCU International Networks. “We look forward to partnering with Secret Location on Halcyon, as Syfy international channels break new ground with the launch of the brand’s first scripted virtual reality series.”

For those that can’t watch the VR episodes, recaps will be available. Production of the series has started up this month in Toronto, Canada, though it’s not yet known when it will air.
