Unity Technologies middleware videogame development engine, Unity, is a popular piece of software for creating virtual reality (VR) titles. Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey recently mentioned: “Something like 90% of projects on Gear VR are made using Unity”, and the company is continuing its support with a newly announced VR scene editor. The Unity engine has also received several additional updates this week.
The latest patch – 5.3.2P3, adds a whole list of fixes with three dedicated to VR. They are:
- VR: Dynamically switch to headset’s audio output / input driver (Oculus SDK 1.0+).
- VR: Fixed VR Splash screen color precision. No Longer limited to half the color spectrum for RGBA32.
- VR: Mask invisible pixels so GPU time is not wasted (Oculus SDK 1.0+).
Its interesting to note that two of these fixes will work with Oculus VR’s software development kit (SDK) 1.0 and above. As the head-mounted display (HMD) manufacturer has only released SDK 0.8 up until now, Unity Technologies may have already seen an early build of the upcoming SDK. SDK 1.0 was expected to be released towards the end of last year, but it never came. With the Oculus Rift due to begin shipping to pre-order customers at the end of March, further details on the new SDK are expected soon.
